The Scientist Lyrics

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need you
And tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets, and nurse me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming in tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart.
Questions of science, science and progress
Don't speak as loud as my heart.
Tell me you love me, and come back and haunt me,
Oh, when I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing tails
coming back as we are.

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy.
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start.

Brief

For my music video, I have decided to choose the song ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay to play on the video. I chose the song because it’s quite an emotional song and has a lot of meaning to it therefore there’s a lot of work I could do with the storyline for the video. The words in the song are very powerful and meaningful so I’m going to enjoy working on the video.

To begin with, my ideas changed a lot but I soon decided the idea that I wanted to stick with. I want the video to start off with a girl and boy walking down separate streets about to meet each other and go out for the day. The two streets they’re walking down eventually meet and so do they. You can tell they’re very much in love and happy with each other, the boy, cuddling the girl closes his eyes and when he re-opens them, it shows him many years later. As an old man sitting in his chair he opens his eyes and turns to see the empty chair beside him. The video then ends with a close up of a photograph of the young couple.

Opinions on song meanings & lip synching

“Everything's happening backwards but chris' lip-synching normally that's because when they recorded the video he lip-synched it backwards and when its played backwards everything happens backwards but he's singing normally.”

I found this research really interesting and hope to add it in to my video.

“Chris (the lead singer) wrote this song for his brother who is trying to pursue his dreams of becoming a scientist. "Questions of science, science and progress." Chris' success and his brother's being at college keeps them from seeing each other. "Come tell me you love me, come back and hold me" and he wishes that things were the way they used to be between them. "Take me back to the start". His brother realized that it's quite hard to become a scientist and was close to flunking out of college, "Nobody said it was easy." but ultimately got back into it and became a scientist. “

“The Scientist is about neglecting their relationship, and when it finishes, he realises his errors, and instantly wants to go back to it again. "Running in circles, chasing our tails" "come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry."
